Call To BAN Macy's

I ask that each of my readers reconsider shopping at mega giant Macy's, part of the Federated Department Stores. On Monday, the 25th Anniversary of the discover of AIDS, Macy's in Boston bowed to complaints from the anti-gay group called MassResistance.

As part of PRIDE week here in Boston, Downtown Crossing shopping staple Macy's had a window display of pride events which also included 2 male mannequins. They removed the 2 male mannequins because MassResistance basically complained enough. The remainder of the display is intact (though they also removed bostonpride and aids action website info) but for Macy's to cave in to the pressures of the radical right and basically alienating a large portion of their clientele... homo's, is not okay.

Here's a link the a Boston Herald article.

I also wanted to point out that last night, the Mayor of Boston, Mumbles Menino urged members of the GLBT community and their supports to contact Macy's directly and to boycott them until they change their ways. I do love Mumbles!

This morning I personally canceled my store charge card which was carried over from when Macy's took over Filene's. Granted, its not like that makes a difference as I don't shop there anyway but it does help send a message that discrimination is not okay.

Macy's has a department called Macy's Pride Network based out of Cincinatti. Pride Network seems to be a PR portion of Federated that ensures anti-discrimination laws are written into their contracts, into their employee handbooks, etc. They take credit for the inclusion of these anti-discrimination laws into the Macy's environment of diversity. To their credit, they offer domestic partnership benefits and require all of their employees to attend sexual discrimination training seminars. Which makes this even more disturbing because it seems like this was obviously a scared Boston low-level managers decision out of fear.

I have emailed Susan Friedman the head of this department letting her know my concerns and my boycott on Federated stores. I urge you to do the same. We must send a message that it is not okay for Macy's to bow to the radical right. If they don't think this will matter in the end, wait til the Boston queers stop shopping! It will be a whole new Black Friday for Macy's. Bitches man... bitches...

Who knew it would be this easy to persuade a major department store to change their ways? I wonder what PETA's doing wrong? We've been trying for years and years and years to get major dept. stores to stop selling fur - apparently we just needed a bunch of bigots on our side.

  • That would be correct Cliff, there are Federated Stores across the country.

It is now Thursday morning and there is still no apology or reasoning that makes sense from Macy's on this issue. Nor have I received a response to my personal emails.

    Shocker.

  • Macy's has the right to put what they want in their window! Why should anyone be forced to support a cause? Last I heard we still had freedom in this country. I will not be supporting special privledges for any group- such as the privledge to be able to DEMAND people support your cause. Rediculous!
